Children And Contact Lenses
Sports Vision Approach
Have you ever considered contact lenses for your child but unsure what’s a “good age” to start? We comfortably fit as young as 8 years old! Makes sense as studies have shown 8-10 is a good place to start. Studies have also shown younger children are at lower risk of infections compared to teenagers. What does that mean? Start them young and imbed good habits from the start! We all know how college life is.
Contact lenses are a great option for a child that plays sports. They probably perform better! Think about it:
- Glasses slide off or down the face
-
Glasses are uncomfy under the helmet
-
Glasses limit their peripheral vision
With contact lenses, they are able to view in a much wider peripheral vision. Now they can react faster! They can track the football easier. They are able to peek at first base easier when on the pitching mound.
We would highly recommend daily disposable contact lenses for children. Daily contact lenses offer a variety of benefits:
-
No need to worry about replacement schedule (2-weeks, 30-Days)
-
No need to worry about cleaning it
-
No need to worry about disinfectant solutions
-
Cleaner. New contact lenses every time they wear it.
If the child have never worn any vision correction and requires it, I recommend a pair of eyeglasses first. Reason being that I want them to appreciate what crisp and clear vision offers. In addition, I want them to demonstrate responsibility of their belongings. If they can take care of their eyeglass, then they can take care of contact lenses! Lastly, I do not recommend them wearing contact lense full-time. It should be a good balance between wearing the eyeglasses and contact lenses.
