August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. One out of 20 children from ages three to five have a vision problem that can result in permanent vision loss if it is left untreated. August is dedicated to preventing vision loss and eye injuries by spreading awareness about the special visual needs of children. In today’s article, your trusted optometrist from Eyes On Norbeck discusses Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month.
The Objectives of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month
During Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, vision care professionals spread information on the importance of healthy vision. We can also teach you about the early detection of vision problems in children. We can discuss the red flags that indicate that a child might have a vision problem, such as strabismus or amblyopia. Early detection of vision conditions is crucial to successful treatment.
The other main objectives of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month is to save children’s eyesight and to raise awareness about preventing eye injuries in children. Every day there are about 100,000 sports-related eye injuries and one third of these injuries can occur in children that are under the age of 16. These injuries are preventable through the use of protective eyewear. During this month, we can also teach you about the importance of a computer vision exam and an eye exam for your children.
What Can You Do
During this August, you should take this opportunity to learn everything that you can about your child’s eye health and safety. You can ask us questions or do your own research online. We also recommend spreading this knowledge by sharing good and factual information to others on social media. You can also support sight-saving programs and eye health and safety education programs in your community.
